Han Solo

Corridor Chat: Han Solo is Coming Back

Yesterday StarWars.com told us that, after Rogue One, the next Star Wars: Anthology film will come to us the 25th of May, 2018, and be revolve around Han Solo, pre-ANH.

‘The next adventure in the Anthology series of Star Wars films will be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, whose credits include the critically acclaimed The LEGO Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, as well as 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street.

The screenplay is written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan. The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.’

Now, this news is bound to excite a lot of people! Han Solo has been a fan-favourite pretty much from the moment he swaggered onto our screens in A New Hope. He was a rogue, a scoundrel, a bad boy with a secret heart of gold. Han Solo also has, in my eyes, one of the most interesting character development arcs of any of the characters in the Original films. Starting of as a bounty-hunter seemingly only after a reward, he becomes a truly valuable and responsible member of the Rebellion and matures a lot in his approach to everything from Leia to Ewoks. So, what is going to happen now?

So far, Lawrence Kasdan is involved in both upcoming films with clear ties to the Originals. His presence gives this film a sense of credibility as well, which makes me believe they’ll be very careful with Han Solo’s portrayal. On the other hand, there’s Miller and Lord though. Although The Lego Movie didn’t really do it for me, I love 21 Jump Street and its sequel, self-consciously named 22 Jump Street. Those two films did something really interesting in the sense that they were very aware of themselves and the genre they were a part of. Knowingly a remake and adaptation, the two films tap into a lot of the stereotypical humour and tropes but does so while also adding some very interesting new aspects to it. Those two films were hilarious and I hope that Miller and Lord bring the same humour and enthusiasm to the Han Solo film.

As we’ve mentioned on Clone Corridor before, we’re excited about the prospect of the Star Wars: Anthology films. With Rogue One we’ll hopefully get a gritty war-film or maybe an espionage thriller set in space. It will definitely not be a saga-film though. That is where it becomes difficult with this Han Solo film because he is part of the sagas and people care a lot about him. Whether it’s him shooting first or him apparently being married, Han Solo causes controversy. If Kennedy, Kasdan, Miller and Lord decide to follow Rogue One‘s path and do something really different, e.g. make this film a comedy, I’ll be very impressed. I will be ever so slightly sceptical until then though because retreading the same ground can be tricky.

Also, if they’re still taking title suggestions I’d like to propose Scoundrel One.
